World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly is an annual celebration that began in 2021. Pope Francis established this celebration on the fourth Sunday of July, near the liturgical memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus (July 26).
This day recognizes and honors the vital role that grandparents and the elderly play in families, communities, the Church, and beyond. It acknowledges their wisdom, experience, and contributions over the years. It promotes the importance of intergenerational relationships. By encouraging younger generations to connect with and learn from their elders, it fosters mutual respect, understanding, and support within families and communities. It fosters a sense of solidarity and support for the elderly, encouraging communities to develop programs and initiatives that enhance their faith and well-being, such as spiritual and social activities, healthcare support, and opportunities for active participation in community life.
For Christians, the Lord has taught us to honor them in the fourth commandment, and Psalm 105 reminds us that the Lord never forgets His people, especially the elderly. He remembers His covenant forever, the word He ordained for a thousand generations—the covenant He made with Abraham, and the oath He swore to Isaac. He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant (Ps 105:8-10). Thus, the theme for the 2024 celebration selected by the Pope is “Do not cast me off in my old age” (Psalm 71:9).
As Christians, it is never our burden but a privilege and responsibility to support our grandparents and the elderly when they are alive as well as when they have died. We must pray for them. Dear God, please bless my grandparents. Thank you for the life they gave my parents and for the life they gave to me. For the ways they helped me and made me strong, I give thanks. For the ways they love me no matter what, I rejoice. For the ways they have paved the road that leads me here, I am grateful. Let them grow in wisdom and joy of life. Let them find peace and rest from their work. Let them be healed of every sickness and pain. And let them see with their own eyes your glory, and the love of the children and grandchildren. Bless them always until they come to rest in you. Amen.
